What Does Being Eco-Friendly Mean in Today's World?

What Does it Mean to Be Eco-Friendly - And Why is it So Important? Terms like "eco-friendly" "green living" and "going green" are all the rage; they are used in advertising, as slogans, labeled on products of all types. These words are on almost every product we see, and may be so overused that no one really pays attention to their meaning. In other words, the real meaning of the words have become too non-committal. Knowing and understanding what ecologically-friendly seriously means can help you make a commitment to a healthier humanity and planet.

Definition

We can describe the terms 'eco-friendly, ' 'green, ' 'environmentally conscious' and other similar terms in the same way. They mean earth-friendly, or not harmful to our encircling environment. So, when we adopt ecological alertness, we take on a lifestyle which embraces objectives, actions, and ideas that are good for the surrounding environment, animal and plant life.

How to Be Earth Friendlier

There are many different ways of assuming this lifestyle, and the decision as to the extent of this change is dependent on each individual. There are those people that adopt it so wholeheartedly they become the hippie, organic farmer who grows his food, makes his individual clothing and refuses to drive a fossil-fuel driven vehicle. Then there are those people that are typical consumers, who simply decide to help the environment a little by purchasing eco-friendly products instead of their more harmful counter-products. This consumer's contribution lies in making sure the products he uses cause the environment no harm, and in some cases even be beneficial to the world; most people fall somewhere between the two extremes.

Why are People Concerned with Being Green?

It isn't that difficult to figure out; fish are dying in the ocean, animals being caught in plastic packaging materials; crops are dying out, and people in developing countries are dying for a lack of food. We see it everywhere; the land and oceans are becoming smaller, and they aren't producing what they once did. The flora and fauna seem to be changing (and not in a good way). We just can't lie to ourselves anymore. It is because of this lack of concern for the environment that the world is in this atrocious condition.

Although newer technology and products bring comfort to our lives, they also bring disaster for our surroundings-and that is why people are changing the way they live and looking for greener products, or an eco-friendlier way of living and of conducting business.

Eco-Friendly Activities

A multitude of people around the nation are embracing eco-friendly activities, even though these may take longer, or may require more of an effort than non natural habitat activities do. These can include activities like car pooling, recycling, composting, gardening and more. Every small effort counts. So even if you aren't up to car pooling, you can participate in other environmentally conscious activities like walking or biking to the store, turning off the lights, line drying your wash, or even buying products to make the world a better and cleaner place.

Why Buy Eco-friendly Business Products?

For years, companies fought against the very idea that the manufacturing of a product caused environmental damage. Many manufacturers feigned ignorance or deceived the public purposely with regards to the manufacturing impact on the environment. Even so, they soon began to realize consumers would not be fooled, and so began their 'Green Quest;' the investing in research, processes, and methods which would create the new eco-friendly businesses. These companies focusing on the elaboration of ecologically friendly products consumers would like as better purchasing alternatives. However, this is not to say that all eco-friendly are safe for the environment. Some are, while others are at least, substantially less damaging than their predecessors.

Analyze Eco-friendly Business Practices

Most 'real' eco-friendly business make products that are either developed from recycled materials, use natural sourced energy like solar, or are made from natural elements like plant sources. These products are either ecologically friendly or can in some way contribute to a friendlier environment.

When trying to be environmentally conscious you should always purchase items that are, if not good for the environment, at least less harmful to it. You want to avoid companies that use the famous "greenwashing" technique. This is the term given to companies who label products as being "eco-friendly," but their products neither stand up to environmentally sound production processes, nor offer a benefit that makes any positive difference to the environment. These greenwash marketing campaigns help a company increase product sales by appealing to the 'greener' society, but their campaign is not founded on true benefits.

To avoid this type of deceit you must always investigate a company's manufacture process, and finalized product to ensure it is more environmentally sound than previous items. Whether a manufacturer makes a product in a factory or on a farm, the working conditions where it is made should be safe and fair. The manufacturer should be a promoter of human rights, the protection of animals and of the environment.

Crop and Animal Products Can Also Be Environmentally Friendly

If the product is a type of crop or animal, then soil pollution, rotation, and animal hormone use, should be considered. Pesticides and hormones are known to negatively affect the environment. As a consumer you should look for manufacturers or growers that avoid the use of such chemicals, and instead, opt for natural methods of controlling insects and growing better crops and animals. To ensure your concerns for the environment are met, analyze the production methods used.

Finding Eco-Friendly Products

Finding the best products for your lifestyle, especially products that cause no harm to the environment can be overwhelming. Analyzing the entire ecological impact of any manufacturer may require a long research process, but there are a number of organizations that can help identify these products for you. These include the Rainforest Alliance, The USDA Organic Certification, The Green Seal and The American Humane Association, so when you see a product printed with one of these seals you can be assured of its ecological friendly manufacture
